North Charleston, South Carolina, is increasingly feeling the impact of global events on its local economy and cultural scene. Recent international developments have brought both challenges and opportunities to our community.
Defense and Security Conferences
In December 2025, the Eastern Defense Summit was held at the Charleston Area Convention Center. This premier defense-focused event brought together over 2,300 government, military, academic, and industry leaders to address national security challenges. The summit emphasized collaboration to ensure the United States maintains an edge in strategic insight, technology, and operational capability.
Military World Summer Games Expansion
Looking ahead, the 2027 Military World Summer Games, organized under the International Military Sports Council (CISM), will include venues across both North and South Carolina. Charlotte remains the primary host city, but the expansion aims to utilize approximately 20 venues between the two states. This event is expected to attract over 8,000 military athletes and delegates from 142 member nations, competing in around 40 events, including Olympic-style sports and specialized military competitions like parachuting. The final list of participating countries, athletes, and venues is anticipated by spring 2026.
Economic Impacts and Community Engagement
These international events are projected to have significant economic impacts on the region. The Military World Summer Games alone are expected to generate approximately $3 billion for North Carolina. While specific figures for South Carolina are not yet available, the inclusion of venues in our state suggests a substantial economic boost. Additionally, these events provide opportunities for local businesses to engage with a global audience, fostering cultural exchange and community pride.
As North Charleston continues to host and participate in events of international significance, our community stands to benefit from increased economic activity and cultural enrichment. Staying informed and involved in these developments will ensure that we maximize the positive impacts of global events on our local landscape.
