Charleston Southern University Expands Athletic Programs with Women’s Flag Football

Charleston Southern University (CSU) has announced the addition of women’s flag football as a varsity intercollegiate sport, with the inaugural season set for spring 2028. This expansion increases CSU’s varsity sports offerings to 17, with women’s athletics growing to 10 teams. The introduction of women’s flag football marks the first new varsity sport at CSU since women’s soccer was added in 1993.

CSU becomes the 14th NCAA Division I institution to sponsor women’s flag football at the varsity level. The decision reflects the university’s commitment to providing diverse athletic opportunities for its student body and aligns with the growing popularity of flag football among women nationwide.

In addition to this development, CSU’s athletic department continues to support a range of sports programs. The Buccaneers compete in the Big South Conference, fielding teams in sports such as basketball, baseball, softball, football, women’s soccer, cross country, track and field, golf, women’s tennis, and volleyball. The university’s dedication to athletics is evident in its comprehensive facilities, including the Brewer Center, which houses a renovated weight room, basketball gym, fitness studio, and game room.

For students interested in recreational sports, CSU offers various intramural and club sports programs. The men’s club soccer team, for example, emphasizes camaraderie and skill development, providing a platform for players to grow both on and off the field. Additionally, the CSU E-Sports team fosters a community for casual and competitive gamers, promoting collaboration and competition in the rapidly expanding field of electronic sports.

As CSU prepares for the launch of women’s flag football, the university continues to enhance its athletic programs, offering students a wide array of opportunities to engage in sports and physical activities.
